Excellent writing, like every Russo novel I've read. Fairly moving at times, covers childhood (mostly) and adult years of narrators life with his parents, mostly his father. I'm not too into the child point of view thing, but the writing and story were very good.

I'd start with Empire Falls or the Straight Man, but after those, this is an excellent choice.

Classic Richard Russo, who I always enjoy. Always a dying upstate New York town, always wonderfully drawn and colorful characters. Also nothing EVER happens in a Richard Russo book, you don't read it for the plotline or great twist. It's just the hilarious and richly drawn out characters that do it.

A pleasure, as ever. He is so funny. I find his tragicomedy deeply reassuring, even early in his career, even when he repeats himself in later books.
