THE FATES DIVIDE was a book I pushed myself through. It just felt too scattered, like the plot didn’t have a driving focus.

About the 40% mark, the “big twist” about the fates comes in, and it was pretty disappointing. There had been such a heavy presence of Akos’ fate in the first book, and in the build up to the twist. When it came, it felt like such a cop-out. I wanted it to be something clever or devastating in and non of that happened

"Suffer the fate, for all else is delusion"

Hey guys, so I finally finished The Fates Divide (Carve the Mark, #2) by Veronica Roth. I think it was a pretty good sequel. I think it focused a lot on the characters, again, just as it did in CTM. However, it was different. The characters were at different places in this novel. This novel was about them trying to figure out where they belonged, where they wanted to fit in, what they wanted in general. Just when they start to try and come to terms with their decisions, everything is blown to smithereens. I am, it was just entirely wrecked. This hit one character in particular the hardest, Akos. Gods. That poor, poor boy just goes through a whirlwind in this novel. At first it seemed like that whirlwind was gonna be what Cyra was going to be subjected to, given the revelations at the end of CTM, but poor Akos was also thrown into his own personal hurricane. Because of the big event that left them scrambling, I feel like one of the main themes in this book was nature versus nurture. They were trying to figure out whether they were made in a particular way, or borne a way. Okay, okay, enough about the main characters suffering, which happened quite often in this book, mentally though, not physically, much. To my surprise, in this book, we got to learn more about Cisi and E. E actually had his own POV. HOnestly, I would have perferred for him to get way more page time, if only because the little chapters he did had, most were just full of confusion and nonsense. Ha, that probably just described his character as a whole. I feel bad for him, I really. But, he also had to learn that his actions had consequences, so yeah...kind of torn between sympathy and justice. Regardless, I kind of want a short story or two about E and his adventures. Sue me. Okay, now to Cisi. I actually liked her POVs. Mostly because i just loved how the author twisted and tangled words to make the descriptions of her current gift come to life. I have never felt so entrenched into a story than I had when I read those. I could physically feel, it was just...man. As for Cisi as a character, well, I admire what she aimed to do, even if her methods werent completely solid, or were they, well, just depends on perspective. Moving on, we are also introduced to a bunch of new supporting.background characters, along with some appearences from a few of the minor characters from CTM. My fav background characters were Ast and Vak, just saying.
As for the actual story itself. Well, it was pretty good. Had some action. Had some fall out. Had the usual stuff a good book needs. What those elements are exactly, well, you just have to read for yourself. The main thing that really elevated this book for me,was the revelation about Akos and Cyra, as I probably mentioned before. It flipped everything about this book and changed everything. Or, at least that's what I thought. The characters had other ideas. Ha. They both handled it differently, by far. How Akos handled it was really....interesting, to say the least. He literally look the beast in the eye and yeah...however, his time with the beast wasnt as horrific as I was imagining considering everything thats been told about the beast, and regarding the brutality/violence written in CTM. But whatever, It played out how it played out, nothing more to it. The ending of the book was...I think it could have been really epic, probably was. However, I felt that at times, the book was dragging towards it, then it rushed it and it just kind of went ehh. And maybe it was my own impatience at just wanting to finish the book that I lost some of the weight to the ending. So...that might be my fault, might not. We'll never know. All in all, I am really glad I read this book, I enjoyed getting back into this world and experiencing everything that unfolded. Okay, as always, if anyone has any questions or comments, drop em below. Till next time. Bye.
