This first deluxe edition volume is put together beautifully. My only gripe with it, is I wish the sound affects had been translated. Of course that’s personal preference. It did help that they had the translation below the art boxes.

With that being said, I hovered between a 2.75 and a 3 star rating. If I have to be honest, I’ll go with the 2.75... it was a good enough story and the art style grew on me, but the story didn’t necessarily blow me away. Some of the fight scenes felt like the same thing over and over again, and it felt like most of the dialog from Alucard was just him laughing? ... that became a bit tedious.

I plan on continuing the series without a doubt and I hope to see some character progression take place. Time will tell!

If you love the idea of vampires fighting essentially Nazi zombies and love anime, this is probably for you. For me, not being that big into anime, this has probably been my least favourite manga I've read (behind Jojo and Berserk). I am going to keep reading, I enjoy the character of Alucard well enough and I kind of want to see what happens to the Hellsing organization. I definitely think the Nazi zombie angle is overplayed, and the fact it was first drafted in a hentai magazine makes a lot of sense (say hi to cat girls and boob anatomy that doesn't make sense), but aside from that it was mostly enjoyable. Hasn't lost me yet.

I do enjoy this series as there is so much action, this is definitely a very fast paced, page turning kind of manga and in the first 4 books we get a lot that happens.

My only issue is at times the artwork is a bit messy and it can be difficult to fully interpret what is actually happening

first of all, this is a handsome edition.
i've not read the Hellsing manga before this but i've seen the original anime adaptation -- the first third of this book was very charming and nostalgic for me. the middle third was alright but didn't really contribute much to the over-arching story. and the last third of the book dragged on.
surprisingly, i'm still interested in the rest of the story [and again, this deluxe edition is attractive on a bookshelf], so i'll be picking up the remaining two volumes.
i like it enough just fine but i don't entirely recommend this to most people.
