This was okay. There were some parts that were kind of exciting, and might be even more exciting for younger readers. The ending felt like it dragged a little bit. There were at least two points where I thought it would have made a good ending, but then it just kept going.

A fun middle grades adventure. Not my favorite by Bowling but one I think my students will still enjoy.

Dusti Bowling has written another thoughtful and entertaining middle reader about friendship and hope - where the kids who are kind and stick up for one another overcome the bullies of the world. Thirteen year old Gus understands that his verbal acuity will be his ticket out of the nowhere of Nowhere, AZ. But he's poor, small and nerdy in a place where that isn't cool, so first he has to survive middle school. Rossi has the temerity to be a girl who also happens to be the best dirt bike racer in town. Bo is a bully who can't stand being beat by Rossi. Gus, Rossi and two boys end up entering a dangerous, abandoned gold mine searching for treasure and finding friendship and much more.

I didn’t enjoy this novel as much as Bowling’s first one. But, it was still a fun read - adventure driven, with a great “cast” of characters. Definitely written for a middle grade audience!

I enjoyed the knitting together of these four kids, who come together in a story about small-town life, dirt bike racing, and a desire for justice.
The insertion of SAT style word definitions is fun and overall the MC has a self-deprecating humor that works.
Themes: bullying, prejudice, loss of parents, friendship
