Zo fascinerend als de eerste keer dat ik het las. De spookachtige aanwezigheid van (het manuscript over) de koning in geel is ongetwijfeld het sterkste element van deze kortverhalen. Bij mijn eerste lezing had ik trouwens ook niet door dat deze kortverhalen aan elkaar gelinkt zijn door de personages die elkaar kennen en de locaties waar de verhalen zich afspelen. De reread was dus zeker nodig.

Five stars for the first half but the stories named after streets (with the exception of The Street of Four Winds) were a slog to get through. If you're only reading this for the horror I would say you can safely skip them.
Alla fine ho deciso di dare tre stelle. Da fan di Lovecraft e sapendo quanto amava questo libro, ho voluto leggerlo ad ogni costo, ma sono sincera: é veramente lento e noioso in certe parti, in altre é davvero straordinario. Ci vuole davvero molta pazienza, e tutt'ora penso che Lovecraft sia superiore a Chambers a livello di stile, però vale la pena leggerlo per comprendere meglio da dove Lovecraft abbia preso ispirazione

I like a lot of the ideas in several of the stories, but the execution all over the place
Most notably, the world building in The Repairer of Reputations is frantic and sporadic, and so little of it seems to contribute to what the story is going for. The final street-themed stories are all fairly dull and meandering romance stories
Meanwhile, The Demoiselle D’Ys is nearly perfectly constructed. The Mask and The Yellow Sign are standout horror stories from the period
My suggestion is to read through The Prophets’ Paradise, then drop it, and you’ll have a better time than I did
