The idea of King In Yellow is one that I really like. A piece of media that drives all that see it insane, though unfortunately the content of the Novella wasn’t as hard hitting as I would have liked.
Comprised of 3 shorter stories involving the King In Yellow, an in universe play banned and buried by the worlds governments being discovered or otherwise looked at by the leads none of the stories go as hard with that concept except the 1st
I suppose a large part of my, I don’t want to call it disappointment in king in yellow was the hype around it. You can’t deny it’s an influential book in the genre but maybe it’s the age of the story or the concept not being used to its full potential but I found it to be a very ‘fine’ novella.
I’d recommend Mark z. Danieluski’s House of Leaves in place of King in Yellow for a story that drives its story readers mad.

the beginning stories are pretty great but the last 3 were kind of a slog, with no real connection to the rest. i felt like the shift in tone was jarring, and not so enjoyable. why stick a war story and some light bohemian romance tales at the end of your cosmic horror collection?

I admit that I only read this collection because I read the io9 article about its possible ties to True Detective. While I have a genuine interest in short stories, especially intertwined and weird ones, this collection is even stranger than I thought it would be. The most compelling stories to me are the horror ones and not simply because they potentially relate the most to the show. The stories live a lot to be understood in part because they are so of their time (you must be familiar with customs and the history of the time) that there are layers to the story that are alluded to but never explained because they would have made sense to the contemporary reader of the time but mean little to a reader in 2014.

The early stories, with a supernatural tone, were awesome. I lost interest in the later, baroque romantic tales, but I can see why Chambers was such an influence on Lovecraft.

Mas pense num livro que enlouquece. O rei de amarelo é uma ode ao terror cósmico e um aceno ao romantismo. Tudo isso escondido por trás do manto rasgado do rei, do rei de amarelo.
