Damn, Chambers almost throws as much French into his writings as does Nabokov. Bit of a mixed bag, both in terms of quality and in horror. Some of the pieces were closer to straight relationships or dramas. Perhaps The Demoiselle D'Ys would be my favourite, though some of the early stories did have some level of 'unnerving, nameless dread'. Though I think 'cosmic horror' is very much pushing it.
The first four stories are great, the rest are mid to miserably boring. Why.
This book is so boring. It had a few good stories and the writing is great but overall I felt like it should been more

I absolutely adore the parts of this story that actually relate to the king in yellow, that being the first 4-ish. Some of the later short stories have similar eeriness to the first 4, but some are just romance novels. The repairer of reputations is really something special to me and is a great introduction to the king in yellow in my opinion, with it being one of my favorite examples of an unreliable narrator.

I only read half of this. Some interesting short stories. But then it got unreadable to me and I tried skipping ahead a bit but I hate doing that so I gave up.

The book is a collection of short stories. The first several, up until The Yellow Sign or The Demoiselle d'Ys are master class horror/weird fiction. They begin to drag after that with an innocuous collection of poems and some rambly love stories set in Paris.
First half of the book is required reading for horror fans. Second half is optional.
