I rushed, hurriedly, determined, bitter, beaten
Consumed by that bean burrito half eaten
Racing, chasing dreams, caught, pinned down, interrogated
Somalia
Sleep deprived, ham on rye
Guantanamo
And as I slipped past a stream I caught on a gossamer beam a glimpse of a reflection in that mirror so vast and deep
My mother
And I swear by all that is dear that I will hear and see clear without fear for as I am surmising so too is my voice rising
Like an eagle or a beagle with a contraption
And I will NOT be some action for your racist faction
Or my name isn’t Tex.

Inconceivable and exquisite and often leans over perfect into whatever's beyond that. Sometimes he's also a bit disappointing but he's forgiven xxxxx

Five stars through "The Waste Land" and "The Hollow Men," three stars afterwards.

It feels a bit glib to give a star rating to a Nobel laureate and one of the more important English-language poets of the 20th c., but here we are. The collection is put more or less chronologically, and I think I agree with the critical consensus (as conveyed by Wikipedia) that Eliot peaked with "The Waste Land" - the later works seem too structurally cute (rhyming adjacent words annoys me) and self-consciously religious. The "Minor Poems" section is interesting for certain lines/images that show up in better works ("The Hollow Men," most obviously).

I would put "Prufrock and Other Observations" (the first section, and a published collection in its own right) as essential, then "The Waste Land" (but it's a complicated beast, to put it mildly). Read on to your taste in Eliot's style.

I'm not one to pick up poetry collections usually, but this one was fantastic! T.S. Eliot's words are eye catching and memorable. I loved every poem, the play excerpts and choruses were less memorable for me, but had a dash of humor every once in a while that made me chuckle out loud. 4.5 stars.
