I haven’t read this for many years but I again find it eerie and dark with consideration for the age group that it was aimed at. Some points are subtle and twisting and satisfying, while others try to hit you over the head to get you to arrive at the same conclusion, kicking and screaming if they have to. Beatty writes a beautifully descriptive world and only makes me want to visit the Biltmore more than I already do.
