It was a fun time. I enjoyed the humor and Pepe is an interesting character, although I wouldn't say a person I'd like to meet in person. I've read some of the best food descriptions/descriptions of people eating in this novel, and it's something I like a lot in the media I consume. What brings the mark lower is the casual misogyny peppered throughout.

Come ho già ribadito nelle precedenti sue opere, Montalbán a me piace, nonostante il suo stile ironico e baroccheggiante non sia apprezzato da tutti. Come si dice: questione di gusti!

Al nostro Pepe viene commissionata un'indagine: scoprire l'identità di un marinaio trovato affogato a mare e col viso irriconoscibile: unico indizio a sua disposizione un tatuaggio che dice "Sono nato per rivoluzionare l'inferno" che lo porterà fino in Olanda.

Anche questa opera di Manuel mi è piaciuta, è stata una lettura piacevole, scanzonata, rilassante, ti fa appassionare alle indagini del nostro simpatico ed ironico investigatore galiziano amante del buon cibo e delle belle donne. La descrizione delle ricette che prepara ti fanno venire l'acquolina in bocca!

Se cercate un noir divertente e un po' sopra le righe, questo è il libro che fa per voi.

Ho letto questo romanzo perché curiosa di scoprire dove Camilleri avesse preso l'ispirazione per il suo Montalbano. Da questo punto di vista l'esperienza è stata un successo, ho ritrovato elementi quali l'amore per il cibo, il modo di intrecciare problemi di natura sociale e politica nella trama, il protagonista che non esita ad andare fuori dal tracciato e non teme di mettersi a tu per tu con la criminalità organizzata.
Per quanto riguarda il libro in sé, la scrittura è scorrevole, ma ho faticato a terminarlo per mancanza di interesse. Di seguito i punti che meno mi hanno convinta:

• Se ho trovato divertente l'ossessione per il cibo (tra l'altro autoironicamente discussa all'interno della storia), quella per i corpi femminili mi ha stancata quasi subito. Il fatto che tutti i personaggi femminili siano anche messi in luce negativa e/o dipinti come macchiette non aiuta.
• In generale l'unico personaggio con una vera caratterizzazione è il protagonista.
• Anche l'ambientazione fatica a emergere, l'autore ha messo più impegno nel raccontare i bassifondi di Amsterdam che non Barcellona, dove si svolge gran parte della storia.
• Come romanzo di genere poteva comunque essere ben fatto, peccato per la soluzione scontata del caso, a cui il protagonista arriva tramite salti di intuizione che mi hanno lasciata decisamente perplessa.

In breve, non leggerei altri libri della stessa serie.

Liked it but didn't love it. Might give it one more shot with another book in the series, but not imminently. The protagonist was interesting, but the plot moved slowly. Somewhat disappointed in the reveal at the end, but overall the book was good.

E picked this up in a bookstore in Florida a few months ago, liked it and recommended it to me. It is a not-great, not that well translated, police procedural, written in 1970's Spain and set in Barcelona (with a side trip to Netherlands.) The atmosphere, locales, food are a plus (as is often the case with police procedural mysteries), but the writing is a minus. Can't recommend it. But I guess I appreciate that my son had eclectic enough taste to try it, and like it. Need to give him better examples of the genre....
