This book feels very pop- music-y and white feminism agenda ( no hate to pop music , I actually quite like pop music) with a little bit of memoir chucked into it.
I constantly felt I was disagreeing with her ideas as to what is right and wrong
Like what did pads do anything to you ? Some people prefer pads , some prefer tampons , some menstrual cups . You can stop with your tampon propaganda , like that’s only good way
She kept bringing up how third world countries still discriminate and consider periods impure. Well , atleast in India , I’ll let you know how it actually started. Basically women of those days had shit load of household work to do and " the elderly" wanted to give them a break from all the work , especially when they are already having to deal with periods cramps and such, quite simply put - a period leave. Unfortunately through the years it became more twisted in its narrative and add in misogyny, you have your present day bs.
Now looking at that , I can assume the elders in your Jewish community also did come from a good place, having healthy amount of space between partners is quite good and what if periods is the time you were apart . It’s just over the years of telephone it does sound misogynistic.
I also have mixed feelings about the discussion of period leave , yes there might be discrimination and some might misuse the leave , but I’d rather have the option of period leave . Because I remember having to go to work with absolute shit shows.
Some women wouldn’t want them just because the leaves might be used as an excuse to overwork you some other day, and they’d rather have some extra discomfort in office rather than that. Some periods are different. But do you not have a fire extinguisher in your house just because the danger isn’t a daily or cyclic occurrence?
Woman, girl groups don't owe you period ads, stop attacking them.
And we don't need overengineered period products , we want them to be more accessible
Period emoji.. literally .. I don't care .. whether it's there or not. Half the emojis we already don’t use.
The more I read the more I thought this isn’t well researched at all, and it doesn’t provide a nuanced narrative. In the end this is just a personal essay with interviews that in turn prove your narrow point of activism that you want to achieve for periods.
I must say I liked the bit about women who don’t have periods but would want them, and trans men who would not want them but are stuck with it . That’s about it.
The idea of this book is actually up my alley, but what a shame that it didn’t deliver.

I wanted to enjoy this book but I just couldn’t.
The topic is a necessary one but the structure the author went for just didn’t work for me. The puns, swearing, and the bashing just a few things that made me sigh heavily.
