Slim book that manages to capture many aspects of this world war.

Not really a fan of this book. Didn’t like the writing style and content was just okay.

I have mixed feelings about this book--I really wanted to love it. I was impressed by the jarring effects of war and the subtle ironies of each character's experience. However, I felt like I was missing the other half of the book--things were jumbled around and (although I stopped reading for a good number of weeks) I felt confused and lost for a good part of the book. Sometimes I really enjoyed the writing and the vague set up of characters whose relationships were specified later but at other times I felt like it was a bit forced. I loved the side notes from the translator in the back that clarified historical events or words. I only wish I could have loved it more.

I really don't know how to respond to '14'. I started it and finished it, yet could not, and still cannot fathom why people have given it such good reviews. It did nothing for me. I sat with it open on the final page and wondered if I had missed something, but had no desire to relive those lost minutes trying to find that something.

If I were a teacher, I would make this required reading. Much insight into WWI, more of a personal, human side to the war.

an interesting read, some very good passages, some are not that exciting. only for people who are interested in WW I and already know about its history.
