This book was overall good. I was a little slow getting into it a first but it was a very unique concept so I was very intrigued as to where she was going to go with this. Once it picked up, I couldn't put it down. I thought I knew what was going to happen and then I as thrown in another direction that I never expected. It was well written and, as I said before, a very unique concept. I also love the way that it was completed.

Oddly enough I really enjoyed this book. I went in with high hopes for this book, and while they were not met, I'm OK with it. Nothing happened like I expected it to, this ended up being more of a fantasy romance, than a more straight forward fantasy like I was expecting.
I was not a fan of Twylla though, while I enjoyed reading about her, she was incredibly frustrating. Throughout the entire book she would complain about how she was given no choices and while she hated the Queen she had to do everything that was asked of her. This got on my nerves, I felt that if she wanted to fix something she needed to get up and fix things herself.
I did not expect the first major twist, and I only had an idea about the second, so that mad me happy. I loved the ending! The last 50 pages were fantastic! Because of those last pages, I am dying to read more. I'm not sure if there will be a second, but if there is I will be picking it up no questions asked.
All in all I really enjoyed this book. While it isn't what I was expecting it to be, it did not disappoint. Also I really really hope there is going to be second one.

I was bored by the main character, and there were too many twists for the length of the book. Just... one too many betrayals to believe. Also, the major twist made it less interesting, not more, which is never a good sign. Not my favourite.

soooo.... this book has been on my tbr shelf for YEARS. Not kidding.
Probably bought it when it was released, hadn't touched it since. I always felt bad for reading other books instead. However, now I've read it I don't feel so bad anymore.

It is not a bad read, it is quite alright. But that is about it. It is alright. Not great, not bad... just an okay read.

I have been putting off a lot of books lately, mostly because I was feeling a little lost. I wasn't sure where I wanted to go next, every series I liked seemed to be underwhelming and all the other books out ever caught my interest. But I've seen this one show up on Goodreads a lot, and I finally decided to give it a go. I love drama, high fantasy, and a little supernatural element. I loved that they were all part of this story.

There's a lot of people that are going to complain about this book for the sole reason that there is a love triangle. But if you can forget that fact in place of the story, I promise it's background noise. There were so many occasions when I was sure I knew how the story was going to go, only to be taken by surprise. I think the author does a fine job of making some deceptions very obvious in order to cloud the ones that will take you by surprise later. And during the last part of this book, I was more than a little taken by surprise.

I like a story that keeps me guessing, I like flawed characters, I like stories that question belief systems, I like stories where things don't always end in a positive way and they're not wrapped up in a pretty bow. I loved this book, that's all I can say.

Disclaimer: It's been four years since I read this, I'm sharing my notes from that time.

Critically
Plot - 4 out of 5 stars
intriguing, twists, simple, day to day life at court, betrayal, lies

Writing Style - 4 out of 5 stars
simple, straight forward, great world building, slow pace, beautiful but also kind of gross descriptions

Characters - 4 out of 5 stars
Twylla: vulnerable, manipulated, insecure, angry, determined
Lief: liar, smart, cunning, manipulative
Merek: desperate, brave, decisive, caring, protective, liar

Emotionally
SpoilerI went into this book with low expectations, and I'm glad to say I was pleasantly surprised.

The plot was very simple and sometimes predictable but still engaging. It starts off very slow and it's mostly learning about the world and the day to day life of the main character. Towards the half-way mark in the book is when things start heating up though not really with a lot of action. It's very secretive, behind the scenes kind of tension. The main character is left out of a lot. It's very similar to a game of chess, very strategic moves.

Twylla was a very interesting main character. In a fantasy, you tend to expect a main female character to take the world on with weapons but Twylla isn't like that. She's in a very vulnerable position and is quite easily manipulated by those around her. I wanted her to be much more assertive but I also appreciated her perspective.

The queen was a fantastic villain. She's driven and incredibly power hungry with just a touch of insanity that makes the dynamic between her and Twylla really entertaining.

Lief was a character that I wasn't sure about. I bought into him and his personality but then was totally swept away by the plot twist. Merek was a freaking phony and I did not like him at all! It was also strange to be duped by both love interests haha.

The Sin Eater's Daughter is my first debut novel of 2015 and it did not fail to disappoint at all! Melinda Salisbury's writing easily sucked me in, as well as her dozens of plot twists, heart aching moments and genuine feeling of denial that is was all over. Take my advice now, this is a book you will want to read this year!

I connected with these characters for sure, Twylla especially. At first Twylla seems very naive to what is going on around her, which you can later see was to make her new life easier on herself. But Twylla from the beginning of the novel to Twylla at the end of the novel are completely two different people. She built herself up so much in with in the story and gave herself the courage she needed to get what she needed done. I feel like most princess you read about aren't that smart, but Twylla is quite intelligent. She put the pieces of the things going on around her together, that I would have never had guessed and she wasn't afraid to go after something far fetched. Twylla is the kind of main character that you will be routing for!

I don't consider it a love triangle, I guess it could be considered one though. Twylla is expected to marry the prince, but her heart just isn't there. That relationship is forced upon her though, it isn't chosen. I don't doubt it that Twylla cares about the prince, it is easily shown through her actions. The other love interest is someone that Twylla has picked for herself. In my honest opinion I like Twylla and Leif better then Twylla and the prince. There is something real in their relationship, considering that this one wasn't being forced upon her. At the end of the novel, Melinda manages to shove a knife into your heart and twist it. With that in mind, I can see Twylla going for either boy. I still ship her and Leif, I probably always will.

A good portion of the beginning of the book was a huge amount of info about the world. After pushing through it though it wasn't that big of a deal, because that info is absolutely needed to understand what is going on. But I think the The Sin Eater's Daughter had some of the craziest royal customs that I am still trying to work some of them out in head. The world building in this book was amazing! I expected Sin Eating to be something magical, when it was actually something very mundane. Which was good because it didn't make the book overly complicated. I can't wait to read more about this world in the upcoming books.

Overall The Sin Eater's Daughter didn't disappoint at all. It didn't leave you bored for a minute, with an even pace and heart pounding moments. This book is going to leave you begging for the next book in the series. I can promise that!
