Well-fitting book to end the series. While Paolini does struggle with brevity as he did in the previous two versions of the series, it is still a fantastic read. I will say you really have to be into the fantasy-philosophy element of the writing to not be annoyed by some of the book. I enjoyed it though because it allowed you to both contemplate the questions Eragon is both posed with and poses but also see how the events of the story impact the characters on a much deeper level then we tend to get with most fantasy books.

Spoilers moving forward:

Some hate on the passages we get about the fingernails in the Hall of the Soothsayer. However, the purpose of the passages was not to inform the reader of some random dude's fingernails. It was to show us what was happening to Nasuada's mind. How, in her desperation, she focused on something so trivial. We see her attempt to humanize her jailer just in time to find out she kills him soon after in a very brutal way, even though she knows she will not be able to escape. This is when we see Nasuada start to make compromises of character. It is the first sign to us, before even Eragon sees it, that Nasuada (and anyone else) can start sliding down the same slope Galbatorix did.

I am also glad we did not end with some huge, physical fight between Galbatorix and Eragon. Paolini laid the pathway for this to be decided with conceptual magic and not swords, which is exactly what he did. We also saw how Eragon, though prepared to murder Galbatorix, did not have to. He found a different way. Galbatorix, when ultimately faced with the pain he caused, ended his own life in a blazingly wild fashion.

We do not get all the answers. We do not know how magic should be policed in the land. We do not know if Nasuada will end up dictatorial. We do not know if the Urgals and other races stay out of violent conflict. We do not know if Eragon and Saphira will live good lives or have happy endings.

But that is reflective of life.

5/5 stars. Great book, but you should be very invested in the story and characters to find joy in it.

Would give it 6 stars if I could. Wow. Just wow. The entire series was 5/5, every single book. But what a way to end things. I have no words. New favorite series, no contest.

Favourite character stays the way I want him too, so no reason to dislike the bookxD

Seriously though I think it was a great ending for the series and a good way to handle Eragons situation.
