This book was cute, but it started to fall off toward the end. I also thought the romance was underdeveloped.

I had so much fun
When You Get the Chance was a pretty sweet YA realistic fiction by Emma Lord. I've recently been on an enemies-to-lovers kick and this was one of the more fun ones that I've come across recently.
Millie Price was an engaging protagonist, who's carrying out a Mamma Mia adventure of her own this summer by trying to find her birth mother when she comes across her dad's LiveJournal, where he blogged about his relationship with three potential ladies. Millie believes that her mother may be able to convince her dad that Madison Musical Theater Precollege is the best choice for her:
The ladies each have their own connection to the stage: Steph, a receptionist at a talent agency that Millie decides to intern at on the off chance that she gets to become closer with here; Farrah, a dance instructor whom Millie decides to take lessons from to improve her skills and Beth, a stage enthusiast with a shy daughter of her own and whom Millie eventually befriends.
As for the enemy, this comes in the form of Oliver, her high school nemesis whom she has waged war with over several high school drama club productions:
Oliver and Millie have a fun push-and-pull relationship. I liked that it wasn't anything mean-spirited even though they have plenty of misunderstandings with each other, such as Millie believing that Oliver has always been more of a hindrance rather than a help in drama club.
I also enjoyed When You Get the Chance because it is one of those rare books that showcases a relationship between a girl and her dad. I also adored the relationship between Millie and her aunt, who is really more like her surrogate mother than just an aunt.

"You have to let me go," i tell him, trying to keep my voice measured. "Like - this is the kind of opportunity that could change my whole life. This is my destiny."
I'm fully aware of my own melodrama, but not enough to curb it. This does feel like my destiny. What were the last seventeen years of aggressive jazz hands and late nights watching Lea Salonga videos and openly weeping to the Dear Evan Hansen soundtrack for if not this?

In my defense, I forgot I was in the library. But also in my defense, Oliver Yang would be annoyed with my existence in any room in this school, and likely every dimension hereafter.
Sure enough, he is fixing me with the same patented Stage Manager Scowl I've watched evolve since we first started mutually irritating the hell out of each other freshman year.

Spoiler
I also enjoyed how the mystery about Millie's mum was eventually resolved as it turns out that Georgie, the head of the talent agency, was her mother.
Cute cute cute cute. Teenage me, who loved New York and musicals, would have died to read a book so perfectly created for her.
Also a great reminder that family includes more than your relatives, which baby Kirsten would have loved to have understood earlier.

Enemies to lovers.
Finding a lost parent.
Self growth.
Reigniting old relationships.
All of the above can be found in this book.
The book was a little slow paced at times but I ended up enjoying it overall. I think readers who love theater will take to this book.
