Ugh I really couldn't get into this book. The plot was all over the place and I felt like I was kept in the dark far too long for the secret to really be that shocking. I was mostly just annoyed that the secret had been that hyped up for nothing.

The book was free, and I still want my money back.

It was a nightmare, start to finish. The writing style is way too simplified, but tries to pretend it's not by swapping out easy adjectives for ones with more syllables. It jumps all over the place, with no connection from phrase to phrase, and there are a lot of chapter cliffhangers that don't go anywhere.

The plot was predictable, but at the same time needlessly convoluted. I guessed who did it early on, but then kept getting confused by all the twists that didn't really have anything to do with the story. (And I'm still not really even sure why Richard was attacked, or what the meaning was behind his phone call???) Every single character is bland and one-dimensional. I actually couldn't even keep all the men straight, because there was no defining characteristic to any of them.

Also, there doesn't seem to be any research done AT ALL. Police procedure was a joke, and the hospital scenes were completely unrealistic. Also, I don't think you can do life-saving first aid on a coma... even a basic Wikipedia search would have told you that. And the book was clearly written by a dude, because women (even ones with black belts) don't go running off after strange men in masks in the middle of the night.

At first I wasn't sure about this, but I'm so glad I continued reading. The mystery of who took Dan kept me guessing the whole time, and whenever I thought I knew for sure who did it something else would happen. The story was so great and I loved the ending - it was perfect.

I think the only thing that bothered me about the book was the writing style. By that I mostly mean dialogue - sometimes it just didn't flow or feel like what people would actually say.

Overall though it was fantastic, and the fact that iBooks had it for free just made it that much better!

Suspenseful, but long

I thought this book was truly thrilling. I was guessing the entire time I was reading to try and figure out who was involved and how. The characters were well developed and the plot was well thought out. I just felt there were sections that dragged and could have been cut to make the story a little more defined.

Well I don't know where to start with this book. I read the reviews and it made me think that the book would be a complete waste of my time. But it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Every time I thought I figured out who had kidnapped Dan, the story got a little more twisted. At certain points the book did get boring and I couldn't even see myself finishing but I had to pull through it and it wasn't that bad in the end.

Ranked #4 (out of 18) of my holiday reads

Undeniably thrilling - 5*

Wow. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and I'm now so excited for the sequel in the trilogy. However, I'm really disappointed with myself that I didn't download the whole trilogy for my holiday as I'm now going to have to wait until I get back to finish Emma's story. I've already read the first two chapters of the sequel as there was a preview at the end of this book and I'm now so excited to read it.

I really connected with Emma and I don't know why. I really enjoyed her character: she was really down-to-Earth and approachable. I liked the theme of 'secrets and lies', which underpinned the majority of the book. It was terrifying what people will do for the ones they love.

This is my first book that I've read by Pilkington and I've really enjoyed it. I like his style and the urgency in his writing.

Brilliant.
I'm looking forward to the sequel.
