This is the first book in a series by a new to me Australian author. Rose Riley is one of the lead detectives in what the press have nicknamed the 'BMK (Blue Moon Killer)' case. The BMK has killed two women in their Gladesville homes. I love reading a book set in a familiar place and this one is set in Sydney. A body is found at the fictional Prince Albert School and Rose and her boss Steve O'Neil (maybe based on Gary Jubelin??) have to decide whether it is the BMK or another killer. Journalist Adam Bowman grew up at Prince Albert School and when he is asked by his editor to cover the story for his newspaper he gets to know Rose and Steve well. The story is very cleverly plotted with trust and mistrust between the characters so that I was constantly wondering who I could believe. The characters are great: from hard bitten Steve O'Neil to potentially corrupt politicians to an obsequious headmaster of a private boys' school. I'm looking forward to this author writing more in this series. I first heard about the book from the 'Chat 10 Looks Three' podcast.

Hard to follow and lacked details

This was a good reminder that I don’t enjoy police procedurals. This book lacked any depth to the characters or situations. The case jumped all over the place in unexpected and seemingly random times in the story so it was impossible to follow anyone’s train of thought. I predicted the ending even with the author using multiple fake “plot twists” to throw you off the scent. I won’t be continuing the series.

Thank you Amazon for the gifted copy.

An excellent police procedural read set in Sydney. I can see it as a movie. Looking forward to more from this author.

Rose Riley and her SPECTRE team are trying to find a serial killer and are distracted/sidetracked by a new but somewhat different dead body. The setting is Australia, and the locales and some of the language were unfamiliar. The cast of characters is fairly large and at some points it was hard for me to keep up with who was who. Interestingly, part of the police team is a forensic psychiatrist.
The plot was good and the ending not predictable, to me, although there were certainly clues.

This is a debut novel. I found the first 75% to be blah and some of the author's word choices to be pretentious, 2 stars. The pov was muddled in the first part of the book as well. The last 25% was good, 4 stars. Not engaging enough to keep track of author or any future books for me.
