I read this story the first time when I was really young, and didn’t remember anything about it. I picked it up this time with much more knowledge about horses and human/animal interactions, and cried several times while reading it in thinking of how terribly people can treat animals, just for a lack of understanding how to communicate with them. I felt sad for Black Beauty, who never did less than his best, even when it meant the worst outcome for him. He was a kind soul and a sweet spirit. I’d feel fortunate to ever know a horse like him. I loved Sewell’s inclusion of the stories of the other horses, too: Ginger, Merrylegs (my most favorite horse name ever!), Captain. Beautiful additions to Black Beauty’s story.

Minor criticism: Some of the dialogue in this one is a little difficult to get through, as it was written many, many years ago. Outside of that, though, this is a beautiful story, told from the horse’s point of view, about his trials of life. I appreciated how it ends, and am glad I re-read this one.

I hadn't read this since I was a child, and I read it obsessively back then. I never realised how revolutionary it would have been, to hear the voice of an animal and the criticism of accepted animal cruelty back then. A wonderful book.

You can never go wrong with the classics. Black Beauty, though not my favourite classic, as the plot is a bit dull, it's one of the musts that a kid has to read.

Glad it ended the way it did because I wouldn't have been okay otherwise.

It would be impossible to count how many times I read this when I was young.
