Finishing this book a second time, I feel sad, the best of Tommy and Tuppence as we knew them is over, the next one in the series [b:N or M?|102313|N or M? (Tommy & Tuppence, #3)|Agatha Christie|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1295677628l/102313._SY75_.jpg|631927] is excellent, but it’s not the young and enthusiastic pair from the two earlier books. I think the “surprise” at the end of this book was just too unsurprising for me and I would prefer time to have not pass in this series.
In this one, Tommy and Tuppence take over a detective agency that is in the middle of a spy ring, short adventures (short stories) ensues. The detectives model themselves on different fictional detectives and sometimes that was hard to follow since not all of them are well known by now so some of the references flew over my head. I liked though when Poirot was their detective of choice, I think Agatha Christie vented some of her frustration against Hastings, Hastings is one of my favourite though.
Like I said I feel sad about Tuppence having to grow up and conform to society (not as much of a fan of Tommy and he does still have the exciting job), I guess we all have to grow up up reality but not in fiction so somewhere Tuppence is still having fun!

Tommy and Tuppence work very well in short story form. Here they’re trying their hand at being private investigators and lots of fun ensues, some cost mysteries and some spy thrills

A solid 3.5. Goes down easy, but it's just Agatha Christie having a bit of fun for kicks before she goes back in to write her actual bread and butter, Poirot/ Marple stories with actual meat, excitement, and nuance. Great palate cleanser in between heavier reads!
I was prepared not to like this collection of short adventures, but found it to be a surprising change from the other Christie mysteries I have read (the Poirots and Miss Marples). What surprised me was the way in which Dame Agatha works into each chapter some reference to another fictional detective. In some chapters, Tommy and Tuppence model their approach after that of the fictional detective. In the last chapter there is a delightful send-up of Poirot himself in a dialogue between Tommy ("Poirot") and Tuppence ("Hastings"). Reading this book took much longer than usual because I paused in order to find out more about Dr. Thorndyke, the Okewood Brothers, Dennis Riordan, Thornby Colton, and Inspector Hanaud -- all fictional detectives from the "Golden Age of Detective Fiction."
