It's a really interesting setting, but feels like Kelvin doesn't really do much throughout the book - things just happen to him. The 'library scenes' feel slightly heavy-handed, and disrupt the pacing of the story. But given most of the expeditions took place in the past, it's unclear how this much worldbuilding could have been handled differently. (Perhaps if Kelvin didn't have the doctorate in Solarist studies, we'd feel like we're learning about Solaris alongside him...?)
Having read more about Stanislaw Lem, and the whole 'futility of alien contact' theme, I understand the intention of the book a lot more and think it conveys that theme excellently. I just wish Kelvin was a little more hands-on with the science/adventuring...
