She’s a great writer and this was sad

This was one of the most heartbreakingly sad books I've ever read. I think I would have to read it again to really understand it or love it though.

It is a pleasure to be put through states you have not experienced, and Didion is a creative force that evokes that in the most shuddering degree. She writes about grief and loss in a painfully realistic cadence, that locks you in her thought processes. Much has now escaped me as "Time is the school in which we learn", I haven't had enough time on this earth. I will return to this book.

2,5 ster voor The Year of Magical Thinking. Ik was gewoon niet geboeid en vond het heel veel herhaling. Voor de verhaallijn zou ik het niet aanraden, maar Joan Didion kan wel prachtig schrijven!

Took me awhile to read, about a month, because there were parts I had to stop and really think about before continuing on. This book though, really resonated. I think as someone who in the past 3 years has experienced a really tragic death in my life, this book felt like a warm embrace and, furthermore, taught me a lot about grieving. I think there’s a lot of vulnerability Didion underwent in order to write this book so honestly and beautifully. It taught me a lot about death and grieving. Being fairly young when I experienced death (I’m still pretty young), I didn’t know what was “normal” in the grieving process, Didion taught me there is no “normal”. I will forever be thankful for this book. It left me feeling so fulfilled and honestly, wiser.
