Quite fun - moved well, and the various pieces came together entertainingly. Faint but noticeable echoes of Sandman Slim.

As a friend of the author - all I can say is just read the book. While sci-fi is one of my lesser read genres I can appreciate good science fiction and I particularly enjoyed the literary references in both insults and code names.

This is the first in a pair of books by Ashton sharing both a writing style & core concept. The style: Writing a story with each chapter written in the voice of, and from the perspective of, individuals from a small cohort of charters. The core concept is genetically "cut" humans that are both part of, but in conflict with, a world that hasn't quite come to grips with the notion of having some people that are more enhanced ("engineered") than the rest.

Ashton has a good sense of humor, action, and sci-fi chops. Lots of tech, chasing-around, perils & successes, and generally a rousing good story.

I read it after reading an advance copy of his third book, having enjoyed that, and wanting more. So, all good.
