3.5/5 stars. This was probably one of Kiersten Modglin's darker books but I did enjoy reading it. It was pretty obvious from the beginning that
Spoilersomething was off with Elias
but getting to the twist parts at the end were really fun. I usually read books from a female perspective so it was interesting having this book be from a male perspective. The reason I rated it 3.5 and not 4 stars is because of how slow the middle of the book was. I felt like there was only so much back and forth that could be talked about with the impending divorce and I got bored of it after a while. But from the celebrity party on, the book definitely picked up and I enjoyed it. I am making my way down the list of all Modglin's books and I think next up for me is The Missing Piece.

Meh. Predictable as all hell and very unrealistic. How many red flags do you need to see in a person before realizing they’re nuts?? Also poorly edited. Not my fave by KM.

This totally gave me single white female vibes with male characters. I loved how Elias was so subtle with his crazy roommate antics.

The Roommate by Kiersten Modglin 275 pages 7 hours and 2 minutes narrated by Stephen Graybill

Genre: Mystery; Thriller > Psychological Thriller, Mystery Thriller

Featuring: Marital Problems, Workaholics, Workplace, Mindless Parenting, Social Technology, Mature Themes

Rating as a movie: R for adult content

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

My thoughts: 41% - The problem with Kiersten Modglin books is, once you start you can't stop and your other books get book on hold.
51% - I really want to slap this mom. I am just not one of those parents that thinks my kids have rights beyond basic needs. You don't have rights you are a child, you don't get the deciding vote in adult decisions. Addy, you're not a zookeeper, you're a parent. If your kid could safely make judgment calls on such matters 14 would be the legal age!
84% - I'm hoping I can knock this out before Amazing Race.

Two of my favorite movies as a kid was The Hand That Rocks The Cradle and The Guardian, the tree-worshipping nanny not Kevin Costner in the Coast Guard. So, I love any psychological thriller in a domestic setting. I was expecting this to be some new aged version of Single White Female, but the main character is a middle-aged man so I was very intrigued. This book isn't getting 5 stars for 3 reasons ¹ I could see through these "twists" long before they were revealed. ² The characters had to be stupid for the plot to work. ³ The ending was anticlimactic.

Recommend to others?: Yes. It was good enough.

This one was twisted and insane. I kept wondering constantly what would happen next, what Elias’ true motive was. This book was so amazing I’ve already picked up another book from Kiersten!

Kiersten Modglin
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Kiersten Modglin is an Amazon Top 30 bestselling author of award-winning psychological suspense novels and a member of International Thriller Writers. Kiersten lives in Nashville, Tennessee, with her husband, daughter, and their two Boston Terriers: Cedric and Georgie. She is best known for her unpredictable suspense, and her readers have dubbed her 'The Queen of Twists.'

“Who’s paranoid now, bitch?”

Wes is dealing with a lot. An extremely demanding job, the operates well outside of the typical 9 to 5. Clients who require him to be always available and flexible. And his marriage is starting to crumble. His wife, Addie, has finally had enough of coming in second to everything else. So they separate. Addie needs time and space. Wes needs to get a clue. But now, Wes may lose everything, including himself.

HOLY HECK AND HOLY BUCKETS. This was a journey. I am exhausted, I feel like I just ran 10 miles, and let’s be real honest- I do not run ever. My heart rate is elevated, I am sweating, breathing heavily, and I could not read this book fast enough.

This story is told from Wes’s perspective, and his internal dialogue will, at times, make you want to shake him. And at other times, it will break your heart. Wes is such a vulnerable character. And honestly, it’s easy to see yourself in his place. We have all put our jobs ahead of the people we love. We have made sacrifices because work was calling. And we don’t do it because we love our family less, but we forget. We forget that the people in our lives need to feel seen, heard, appreciated. Boy, does Wes get a killer reminder.

I loved Addie, Wes’s wife. She comes across as genuine, kind, smart, loving, and forgiving. It’s pretty apparent from her introduction that she has allowed more than she should have for her and Rory- their teenage daughter- to come in second, or third, or fifth. She has tolerated being forgotten, under-appreciated, and treated as a convenience for far too long. Now, she’s devastated and has had enough. Wes is going to hear her. Wes is going to see her. And Wes is going to realize what he is losing.

The build-up for this book is so intense and yet so evenly paced, and you really will not see the twist until the first one smacks you in the face. The Queen of Twists strikes again, y’all. Everything in this book is so carefully crafted and so delicately places. It is the ultimate house of cards- and boy, is Kiersten ever a gust of wind.

Elias is an old acquaintance from high school, whom Wes hasn’t seen or spoken to in ages. When they happen to run into each other, Wes has no idea how crazy things will become. Kiersten has such a gift for developing her characters. These characters are all so fleshed out that they could be real people. And the most terrifying thing about this book is something like this could actually happen.

In what may be the most intense hours of their lives, buckle up because you’re in for one hell of a ride.

After reading so many of Kiersten Modglin books I can tell how far she has come as a writer. I liked this one but it's not quiet as tense and fast paced as her newer books. Still a solid thriller!
