The pious, perfect women drove me mildly batty. Definitely written by a man.b

After reading this novel, it is easy to see how it set off the Gothic genre. It is a quick read and there are sections where it reads slow, but it is worth it.

This novel grabbed me from the start, and didn’t let go. Even if it’s a cliché, patriarcal, knight-in-shining-armour story, I still loved the way Walpole wrote in the gothic aspect of it. At times it’s a bit extravagant and doesn’t really make much sense, but to be honest, I loved exactly that.

I definitely cared about Matilda throughout the entire novel. She was my favourite out of all the characters. Theodore came in second. I am very excited about my Gothic Literature lesson talking about this book.
