5 Stars. Joe Pike! Crais knocked this one out of the park. I wasn’t sure what it would be like with Elvis taking on Pike’s supporting role but it worked perfectly. Great Mystery. Great Thriller. Larkin was such a good character that I hope we see her again although that’s probably not likely. When Crais is at his best, not many come close.

I enjoyed this deeper dive into Joe Pike and letting him take the starring role for a change. A fun ride.
Good tight book
Fast paced well written action thriller. Very tight story line. Usual superman saves the day story line but what the heck, aren't they all?

This came highly recommended by a friend, and I was not disappointed. It was great to have a detective bodyguarding a woman without the two of them falling in love (although the mutual admiration they develop is a very satisfying part of the story). It was also nice not to have a murder at the center of the plot, and yet there's still a tangled web to be explored. I hadn't read any of Crais's books before, so this was my first featuring either of his detective characters Joe Pike and Elvis Cole. I will definitely read more of these.
I started it as a light book to read in between book club books. It was alright but I wasn't vested in it so I stopped when my club announced the next book.
Spoiler
I am unfamiliar with this author. I am unfamiliar with this series. I am unfamiliar with the characters. The first 5 chapters I was convinced I jumped into the middle of a whole series and it took me too long to realize that an author wouldn’t do that. The style of writing and the text font was obvious by chapter 7 and I felt foolish.
I was pretty entertained throughout reading this story. The cop, marine, government or for-hire contractor was intense. I now know that I CAN shut down a body with a pressure point.
It would have been the perfect airplane book. The goal of reading the books I currently own continues..
Crais appears to be moving ever further away from the classic PI story and closer to the thriller, as he also seems to be moving away from Elvis Cole and towards Joe Pike. I'm not sure Crais's characters are ever very believable -- especially the Paris Hilton-esque heiress at the center of this case -- but he keeps things moving entertainingly.
