Oscar Wilde is brilliant at writing about different perspectives on morality. This book starts slow, but ends in a way that is worth the time invested.

Review: The Picture of Dorian Gray (🇩🇪 below)

Synopsis: Dorian Gray is a beautiful young man who has his portrait painted. Confronted with the fact that he will age and the picture will mock him for it, he wishes to stay forever young. It is a story about moral decay.

I have mixed feelings. On one hand, it is beautifully, artfully written. I also like that it leaves the moral to the reader (interesting, because the novel was published twice - the second time apparently being 'less unmoral').

On the other hand, there is a lot of misogyny and sprinkles of antisemitism in this book. It is fitting for Dorians Character development, at the same time I found these parts hard to read. It seems that Wilde used many stereotypes to represent various movements of the Victorian era. So I am left a little puzzled while repeating this citation in my head: It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors.
___

Dazu schwirrt mir sein Zitat im Kopf: It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors.
