If you will pardon the pun, this book didn't set my world alight.
I enjoyed Maeve and found it refreshing that she wasn't the top dog DCI with all the answers but a more junior and less respected officer.
The Burning Man plot was actually a really small part of the overall book and for me it didn't have a very satisfactory ending. It felt a bit rushed and overshadowed.
I liked the other murder plot but it was way too burdened with the unnecessary. It needed a good edit to take out all the wanderings and to make it more succinct and punchy. I hated Louise's chapters and by the end I had stopped reading them altogether. They added nothing to the plot at all and just made me lose focus.
I liked the actual writing, it was descriptive but just needed to be taken back a bit

When a fifth victim of the Burning Man is found something about it makes DC Maeve Kerrigan uneasy, she's not sure about it, it has many of the hallmarks of the Burning Man but it somehow just does't fit, this leads her down a path that asks many questions of her friends and family, questions that end up down a different path. Can she prove her suspicions? Is she barking up a wrong tree? Will they find the murderer or murderers?
I like Maeve, she's an interesting character with depth and she's good at what she does. She deals with problems as best she can and everything isn't just easy for her. She works at her investigations and doesn't hesitate to question herself.
It was a good read that kept me asking questions throughout.

The Burning Man has been terrorising London for weeks. Detective Maeve Kerrigan is determined to be the one to stop him, but the more she learns about the latest victim the more she questions whether the Burning Man is responsible or whether they now have a copycat on their hands too. How can she prove this when most of the evidence has been burned away?
My first delve into Jane Casey, and I was pleasantly surprised. I was a bit unsure for the first few chapters how things would go but quickly got into the story and found myself enjoying the read.
Maeve Kerrigan is a refreshing female lead detective. She's good at her job without being a hot head, and whilst Casey does convey that she is a woman in a predominantly male world, Kerrigan doesn't act like she has something to prove which is so often a character trait of female police officers in fiction.
I thought the plot was interesting, and kept me engaged. It was hard to tell who I felt most suspicious of, as there was a few characters that didn't ring true to me. Needless to say it ended up being a more intricate mystery than it first seemed.
For my first entry into a series I enjoyed this one, and am looking forward to seeing what happens next. I think there was more than enough of a connection made with Maeve and her fellow detectives for the series to build on.
I thought the ending dragged out a bit longer than necessary, but that was a minor thing and overall didn't impact my enjoyment of the book too much. The second book sounds good so we'll see how the series develops.

I really enjoyed this first book in a series featuring DC Maeve Kerrigan - I liked her single-minded determined focus, and I enjoyed that this isn't really about the serial killer that it initially focuses on, but a mysterious copycat crime. I finished this with the satisfying feeling of having enjoyed the first book in a reasonably long series - so much reading goodness ahead of me.
