Did not finish. Did not get through first chapter. Trite and tedious. I started skipping big sections in the prologue because they were overlong and didn't advance the story. Kept on skipping in chapter one, so I gave up.

This book wasn't the psychological thriller I was expecting, but it wasn't terrible either. I really liked the character Maeve, so I'll likely at least read the next book in the series. However, the way the serial killer was caught was too neat. Also, the second plot involving Rebecca/Louise/Gil didn't really unravel in a suspenseful way. Rather, the reader gets all the details in a letter Louise writes at the end. Again, I thought it was too easy and kind of a cop-out (no pun intended) on the part of the author.

The Burning by Jane Casey is a crime novel about a serial killer identified as the Burning Man by the media. He has beaten four women to death and sets their bodies on fire and watches them burn. Rebecca Haworth is believed to be the fifth victim of this serial killer. But for detective Meave Kerrigan, something about her death is not like the others. Is she really a fifth victim or is there a copy cat killer? Meave will do whatever it takes, even putting herself in harms way, in order to find the Burning Man and find out what really happened to Rebecca.

Wow, this was a really good book. From the start Jane draws readers in. I wanted to know right from the beginning what would happen next. I really liked Jane's writing and how she draws her readers in. Meave was a very likable character. I loved the way Jane decides to wrap things up at the end with the "note". (I don't want to give to much away, so I wont go further.) I also liked how she used newspaper articles to bring everything up to date. I chose to start with that quote from the book, because unfortunately it fits all the victims, Rebecca the most.

This is definitely a must read, especially for people who love crime novels. I will for sure read more by Jane. Thanks goodreads for this giveaway!.

I was drawn to this because of the comparison to Tana French. I liked Maeve as a protagonist and as a detective. The two aren't mutually exclusive and I find that I often continue reading series where I like one but not the other (usually detecting is more important) so it was nice to like her all round. Jane Casey isn't quite as gritty or dark as Tana French but I still liked this enough to continue on. As with the Dublin Murder Squad this is a police procedural but I assume we'll be sticking with Maeve for this series, which is a relief. The mystery was engaging if a tad predictable, but Maeve was a good companion for the journey.

I liked the characters and the set up for a series. Some characters like Judd and Ian were somewhat lacking in depth, but it didn't detract overall. The mystery was engaging and while some of the twists were predictable, it still made for an entertaining read. Will look to read more in the series.

I really enjoyed this! I feel like the letter at the end was a bit much, but I would definitely read more in the series. Great characters and lots of directions for them to go in.
