I only read a few chapters of this as the change in font size was difficult on my eyes.
An enjoyable read. Not a fast paced story, but I still enjoyed it. I did guess who was guilty at the start but it didn't spoil it for me. I do enjoy Jane Casey books but this was not her strongest book, in my opinion.
Another series that I had started and intend on carrying on with. The Burning is the first in Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan series. I really like Maeve as a lead character. She is not as hard as many other female police characters we meet in books.
The book is about a serial killer killing lone females in London and finishing them off by burning them. Maeve in instructed to work on the latest in the series of killings but something is telling her that the death of Rebecca is not the work of the serial killer.
This is not a speedy book to read - I did sometimes feel it was a little too slow but understand that the first in the series is to establish the characters.
I actually liked the character of Rob and the romance behind the characters - I felt this was well done and fairly realistic which is unexpected in a book of this nature.

There's something gripping about the way Jane Casey writes, there is so much detail in everything that at points you wonder why you needed to know what was just said - but only after you have read it! I thought the plot of this was very good, though I sort of wished a bit more focus had been on the original Burning Man victims because it made it obvious that the Rebecca case was a different story. However I did enjoy the book and I would recommend the Maeve Kerrigan series.
I enjoyed this book very much. At first the UK narration (and it SHOULD be UK narration since that's where it is set) was disconcerting to me, but now I am on my next book and I miss my UK narrator. The story was excellent and smacked of real life in that we don't always get every lose end neatly tied up, right Gill? I thought that Maeve Kerrigan was extremely well developed with all of her doubts and flaws, much like those that all of us carry about every day. It was just a great story that kept me walking every day because I couldn't wait to get my audio book in my ear and find out what happened next. My only complaint was that one of the characters lied to us in the beginning as they were narrating events to us. I understand that in that circumstance, I too, might lie to the police. But what you tell the readers in your role as narrator is assumed to be truth. Now I can never again trust a character acting as a first person narrator to be telling me the truth, at least one of Ms. Casey's characters.

Maeve Kerrigan Series #1
I might have read this at the wrong time, right after other more lightweight detective books, but while well-written and an interesting plot, I wasn't enamoured by Maeve as a character and I found her fellow male police officers rather too stereotypical. Parts of it felt quite sexist to me, and I had to remind myself that it was written by a woman. I found the details of the victims quite gory and slightly sensationalised, which has put me off dipping into any of the further books in the series.

4.5 *s.
After reading so many great review of Jane Casey's books, I decided to start at the beginning of the series. This is the first in the Maeve Kerrigan series. I thought this was a great crime novel with characters that I am excited to see more. I've already ordered the second in the series.

Honestly, this was longer than it needed to be, especially the ending, but it kept my interest and I was curious about where the plot was going. I liked the main character, Maeve, and am looking forward to reading what happens with her. It is hard to find a good mystery series and I'm hopeful that I've found a good one.
