The Burning

After reading her first book The Missing earlier this year, I expected this book to be a lot better than what it actually was.

I am quite disappointed by it to be honest.

I didn't hate the book, I just did not like certain bits to it. I really liked the characters of Maeve and would have loved to have had more of the book in Rob's perspective. I even liked Louise to a certain extent. The characters of all the other "cops" though, left a lot to be desired, I find it hard to believe how obnoxious they were towards Maeve just because she was a woman. Are police really like this towards women who investigate murders etc?

My dislikes of this book was that it wasnt actually about the other murder victims of "The Burning Man", it was about the one victim Rebecca Haworth, and the character of "The Burning Man" doesnt even come into it until 3/4s or so into the book and then it was wayyyyy too easy. They didnt stretch it out in any way. I don't want to say too much and give too much away because one of the things I want to say is a spoiler when reading that synposis.

I have read a lot better crime books. Although saying that I will probably give The Reckoning a go when released next year to see if its back up to standard.

One-Sentence Summary: A female detective in London fights chauvinism in order to catch a killer

Review: A strong procedural crime novel with an engaging protagonist. The multiple 1st Person POVs took a bit of getting used to for me personally but I'll definitely be picking up the next book in the series.

I suppose I had high hopes for this book, but was disappointed. I deduced Rebecca’s killer from early on, and although it was interesting to see the process, it was not a surprise.
The last chapter, in the style of a letter was really contrived. It would have been better to get all those details throughout the book.
The annoying and sometimes degrading way, Maeve is treated as a woman on the force sounded very realistic.
However, the childish, ridiculous way the grown, experienced policemen fight for the boss’s favors was incredibly annoying and totally unnecessary.

This is a really well written, intelligent police procedural told by Maeve Kerrigan, the detective investigating the case, and also by the victims friend, Louise.

I love Maeve! She's a woman trying to hold her own in a man's world, and I got so annoyed for her about the sexist, racist attitude of her colleagues! Her character felt totally real to me, and I felt I'd love to have her as a friend!

The book had me hooked all the way through and I couldn't stop listening far too late ito the night just to see what was gong to happen next!

Highly recommended. I'm going to read Book 2 in the series straight away!
