I liked this a lot more than I like most YA, the reflections on loss, grief, anger, chosen family, immigration, love and faith were beautifully woven together through complicated, grieving characters. Besides the HS bully and the youthful and kind/calm Imam (have to keep some YA flatness/tropes) all the characters were more sympathetic and complex than I expected. I cried at the end. Would recommend!

I love all of Sabaa’s work, but I’m not much of a fan of the contemporary genre. Even so, I loved this book and it’s the quickest I’ve finished a book in over a year.

I'm not sure how to rate this one.  Definitely check the trigger warnings, I had to put this book down for a while because it became too much for me.  But when I picked it back up I zoomed through it.  Some of Salahudin's decision making annoyed me, but overall he and Noor were both very compelling characters, and I wish the best for both of them.

I will also add that at points, this book felt like it was bordering on pain porn, with so many bad things happening to our MCs at once.
