This book is so good. I was crying many times and tears of joy and relief at the end, too. Definitely an amazing story of humanity and love.

Will I ever be able to think about this book without feeling emotional and insanely grateful that it was written?

This was a deeply personal story about the immigrant experience in the U.S. told from the perspective of Noor and Salahudin whose families left Pakistan when they were children.  A few chapters are set in the past and narrated by Sal's mum Misbah, adding another layer to the story. The characters, their struggles, complexities, and backgrounds were so well fleshed out. I loved the thought and detail that went into the portrayal of Pakistani culture, tradition and Islam, and the way difficult subjects (please check trigger warnings at the bottom) were handled.

This was a heartbreaking and distressing book at times, but it was so real in its rawness. It will resonate with a lot of people who had to pack up their bags, leave the only life they’ve always known behind and move to another country. But it’s also a love letter to the young and old who had a difficult childhood. Know that you are not alone.

Thank you, thank you Sabaa Tahir for writing such a precious book. A future classic.
