At first, I didn’t understand the hype about the book and thought it was a silly badly written romance. No, as I progressed, it got better and better and more frustration and sadder. At some point, I was full on sobbing. Second ever book to make me do that. At first I didnt understand why Sal rejected Noor and thought it was just a plot-device that has no purpose, but when Sal’s thing is revealed, I understood. I love Sal. I relate to him. His anger and desperation. Sal didnt deserve that and I’m glad it’s a happy ending. I want to know more about how they live. I hope Misbah is resting peacefully. I hope Toufiq becomes a good dad to Sal again. I hope Noor gets the life she wants and deserves. I hope Sal and Noor are happy. I also love the Imam and Khadija. I love how the Imam does not tell Noor that yes, god only gives us what we can handle in that one scene. Because sometimes it IS too much. And we can’t handle. That’s okay. The muslim rep not being accurate to me is not an issue, the characters explicitly say that they are not religious. And that’s the reality of muslims. Not everyone is a devoted muslim. Also, I feel sad for Shaukat. Yes he is an abuser. Yes I have no sympathy for him. Yes he can rot in hell. But also, his lost dreams that he for sure could have achieved. I feel sad that he rejects his culture this intensely and blames Noor for his failure. I like the criticism of islam that came from him, though the delivery was abysmal, he had some correct points.

“Rage can fuel you. But grief gnaws at you slow, a termite nibbling at your soul until you're a whisper of what you used to be.”

I read this as a buddy read and WOW. This book was so heavy, so please proceed with caution and check trigger warnings before reading. The author has the trigger warnings at the beginning as well.

This story is told from the perspective of Salahudin, Noor, and Misbah. Misbah is Salahudin’s mother and these are mainly all from the past! The book does go back and forth in time due to this, but it works really well here!

Salahudin and Noor have gone through so much at such a young age and my heart was hurting for them. This was my first Sabaa Tahir book (I have some of her other books on my shelf!) and the writing was phenomenal. I would definitely recommend picking this one up!

I have many feelings about this novel, and I am not sure if all of them will come across coherently, but I immensely enjoyed this book. I read it in one day. The author did such an amazing job weaving such heavy topics and a heavy story line into what seems like everyday events. The heaviness is not divorced from the mundane and makes a very complete and realistic picture of the characters and what is happening in their lives.

The last fourth of the book felt like it moved too quickly for my tastes, but it was not rushed. I wish we had gotten a little more time with the main characters and the futures they worked to reach. We got such a rich look into their inner lives as the story developed that I wish it continued into the end of the novel, instead of it pushing to wrap up. But, then again, there wasn't too much to say about that time post climax, things were over and that's all that mattered.

There was so much to wrestle with in this novel, and so much of it hit home. Watching my mom make a new life here for us, dealing with all the bullies in school, and just trying to figure myself out as much as any other teenager was doing.

I recommend this book to everyone. It is sad and heavy and yet full of hope and love for each other and for the future. While the themes maybe distressing, it is absolutely worth the ride.

Lahore, Pakistan. Then.
Misbah is a dreamer and storyteller, newly married to Toufiq in an arranged match. After their young life is shaken by tragedy, they come to the United States and open the Cloud’s Rest Inn Motel, hoping for a new start.

Juniper, California. Now.
Salahudin and Noor are more than best friends; they are family. Growing up as outcasts in the small desert town of Juniper, California, they understand each other the way no one else does. Until The Fight, which destroys their bond with the swift fury of a star exploding.

Now, Sal scrambles to run the family motel as his mother Misbah’s health fails and his grieving father loses himself to alcoholism. Noor, meanwhile, walks a harrowing tightrope: working at her wrathful uncle’s liquor store while hiding the fact that she’s applying to college so she can escape him—and Juniper—forever.

When Sal’s attempts to save the motel spiral out of control, he and Noor must ask themselves what friendship is worth—and what it takes to defeat the monsters in their pasts and the ones in their midst.

I am very particular in selecting what young adult novels I choose to pick up, and will say it is not a genre I read often. One thing I can say for sure is that when I do I want something hard hitting and realistic with emotional depth. All My Rage 100% delivered on that. Since finishing, I cannot stop thinking about it.

Sabaa Tahir's writing is simply stunning! The narrative is highly readable, yet there is definitely no sugarcoating, and she handles many difficult topics with care and expertise. In fact, it reads almost like non-fiction because everything seemed so real. While there is so much pain, there is also so much hope. It's a genuine portrayal of the cost of the American dream, as well as, what people of colour continue to encounter on a daily basis.

Beyond the writing and tough stuff, there is a beautiful friendship and love story. Sal and Noor's is an authentic love story. Their development and character arcs were equally engaging. As a reader, I was right there alongside them. The theme of forgiveness is also very present - sometimes hard things are hard to forgive, and yet they must be in order to move forward. The audio narration is packed with another layer of emotion and really brought the whole thing to life.

All My Rage made me feel. It made me think. And it certainly made it's way into my heart and easily onto my 2023 favourites list. It's everything I am looking for in the young adult genre and one I would highly recommend to others. Sabaa Tahir has certainly emerged as a writer to watch.

"Wondering how someone who filled up a room could fit into a box so small."

"Rage can fuel you. But grief gnaws at you slow, a termite nibbling at your soul until you're a whisper of what you used to be."

"The more you ask for,” she’d say, “the better. Because it means you’ve put your faith in something greater than yourself."
