I love all of Sabaa’s work, but I’m not much of a fan of the contemporary genre. Even so, I loved this book and it’s the quickest I’ve finished a book in over a year.

I have many feelings about this novel, and I am not sure if all of them will come across coherently, but I immensely enjoyed this book. I read it in one day. The author did such an amazing job weaving such heavy topics and a heavy story line into what seems like everyday events. The heaviness is not divorced from the mundane and makes a very complete and realistic picture of the characters and what is happening in their lives.

The last fourth of the book felt like it moved too quickly for my tastes, but it was not rushed. I wish we had gotten a little more time with the main characters and the futures they worked to reach. We got such a rich look into their inner lives as the story developed that I wish it continued into the end of the novel, instead of it pushing to wrap up. But, then again, there wasn't too much to say about that time post climax, things were over and that's all that mattered.

There was so much to wrestle with in this novel, and so much of it hit home. Watching my mom make a new life here for us, dealing with all the bullies in school, and just trying to figure myself out as much as any other teenager was doing.

I recommend this book to everyone. It is sad and heavy and yet full of hope and love for each other and for the future. While the themes maybe distressing, it is absolutely worth the ride.

This book coming from Sabaa Tahir, who wrote one of the fluffiest YA series I have read, is gut wrenching, human, and everything a novel about immigrant families in a rural white town should be. It felt a bit contrived at times in terms of everything happening at once, but the underlying theme of religion and things as they should be made it alright for me. The book spells out in plain English the reverberating complications of poverty and racism in a high school setting. Would definitely recommend this book.
