Sabaa Tahir's An Ember in the Ashes quartet are four of my most favorite books (and I'm not much of a fantasy reader!). I was 22 when I read the first book for the first time, and I wasn't sure I would even enjoy young adult books anymore, or fantasy, but I immediately fell in love. So when I first heard Sabaa Tahir was writing a contemporary, my first thought was what noooooo, her fantasy is some of the only fantasy I like to read!!!! I need more of it!!! I was of course still excited to read the contemporary fiction, as I did have faith it would be good, but I was also thinking it would be a great breather for her before going back to fantasy. Now that I have finished, I can now say with 10000% assurance: I will read ANYTHING Sabaa Tahir writes. I am stilllllll hoping for more fantasy, but now I am also hoping for more contemporaries, while also dreaming of all the different genres Sabaa Tahir could write and make me cry and fall in love with all over again. Science fiction? Historical fiction? Fluffy romance? Horror? Murder mystery? NONFICTION? SOMETHING ELSE? SIGN ME UP!!!!
ACTUAL BOOK REVIEW:
FIRST THING: While I was okay going into this blindly (only knowing it had some heavy & emotional topics and that Sabaa Tahir had written it), please remember to check content warnings StoryGraph provides from reader's submissions if there are topics you are not wanting to read about. While it is an incredible story, it is a difficult one. It will not be for everyone. Stay safe.
Having said that, knowing it was an emotional read and actually HAVING an emotional reading experience are two totally different things. It really did get to me in a way I wasn't expecting. While I have read many hard-hitting stories, I think this one made me a bit teary (RARE) because it was just so so so so beautifully written. I highlighted so many passages in this on my ebook, so that I can look back on them later, even though I know the essence of these words will live on in my head for quite some time. I don't want to spoil anything with tags even so all I will say is: This book really is incredible. Noor and Salahudin and Ama and all those who loved them have lodged themselves into my heart. The structure and pacing of this book was absolutely perfect. This book is so special.
