I enjoyed parts of All My Rage, but at the end of the day it ended up being a bit too YA for me to really sink my teeth into. There is a lot of emotionally challenging content in this novel - physical abuse, domestic violence, alcoholism and substance use issues, death of parents and families, immigration trauma, incarceration, and prominently, racism, yet a lot of this novel felt really cheesy to me. I didn't love the ending or the plot device of using many (many) references to specific pop culture songs as a stand in for how a character was feeling. I did enjoy the diversity of characters and learning about elements of Pakistani language, culture, and food, and I would recommend this book for younger readers to think about intersectionality theory in an accessible way.

Gritty and heart-breaking, this book discusses all the ways that life can hurt us and try to break our spirits. It serves as a reminder that we have to remain strong, fight another day, push through the hard things even when it doesn’t feel like we can. This book touched me to my core. I connected with Noor and her love for songs and with Salahudin and his love of words. They tell a story that is devastating yet real and show how love can conquer the demons that plague us.

I vaguely remember partially reading this last year but I wasn’t in the right headspace so I put it away until much later aka these past couple of days. Wow. The intense rollercoaster of emotions that Sal + Noor went through with the smidge of Sal’s mom giving us her own P.O.V was deeply saddening but poignant at the same time. This is something that occurs to young teens of color & their parents more often than not. You are in a corner and the only way out is through illegal means. I knew there would be a consequence and while the climax happened a little later than I anticipated, absolutely a must read you won’t be able to put down.

Beautifully written, very intense with lots of hard issues addressed. Note some content may be triggering for some readers.

This book is exactly as the title suggests. If you can’t or don’t want to handle the very heavy themes, skip this one.
