I can't wait to read the next installment in this series. The author does a good job of keeping her characters believably terrified of the task ahead of them without turning them into unlikable wussies.

In a world of fantasy books about vampires, werewolves and demons, I have to say it is more than nice to see some mermaids. And not just any mermaid, but strong lead young women. What a beautiful world that was created, I loved the fact that not all mermaids were the same and derivatives or various fish or other sea creatures (orcas, lantern fish, lion fish, etc). I would love to see this illustrated!!
Oh and the idea of the songspell, because it travels better underwater, was a nice touch.

Serefina starts out as a typical YA heroine as she tries to figure out her place at court, but the assignation of her parents at the coming of age ceremony changes everything and she sets off on a dangerous journey with her best friend. The prophecy of the 6 means I know we will be meeting others, what fun!

I really enjoyed this story. I thought it was really unique and held a lot of mystery for the reader. I loved how it was a girl power quest story. There aren’t a lot of male characters in it which Jennifer Donnelly tends to do. It was a story of friendship and the magic of the ocean. While I know it’s a series, I was surprised at how heavy it was on setting itself up for the second one. A major cliff hanger at the end.

I loved the character of Blu. He has in the book briefly but I became very attached to him and I hope we see him again soon.

I will say that it was a little hard to get into because there are a lot “mermaid terms” and other languages thrown in that make it difficult to get into the story. This is one of those scenarios where every single person who reads this will pronounce words and names differently.
There’s a glossary in the back. Let me just leave it at that.

Overall, very enjoyable and I’ll be picking up the second one soon.

I really must stop with these new series, I just get upset when I find out I cannot get the next ones. It was a pretty good book! A bit fast paced at times, I had to reread some sections> I felt and still feel like something was skipped. But regardless, I cannot wait to read more about the 5 friend (6 if Astrid comes back..) and their adventures to save their world!

I was not sure how much I would like this book. At first there were almost too many made up words for this world, but I soon got caught into the story and they did not bother me as much. There are some very strong characters and I am really looking forward to continuing this series.
