Jenni Holm just knows how to write a historical fiction with memorable characters. Who could forget May Amelia from Our Only May Amelia, Turtle and The Diaper Gang from Turtle in Paradise, and now Penny, Uncle Dominic, Frankie, and Mr. Mulligan from Penny from Heaven. Loved it!

This book nearly made me cry which is quite a feat! I admit to tearing up at least three times. I loved getting to learn about an Italian family during and after WWII and all of the struggles they went through. A fascinating way to learn some history! The only con I can think of is a little bit of superstition which was mostly treated with doubt and humor. I would recommend this book to anyone. Oh, and I want and Uncle Dominic please! :)

I read this book as a kid and really liked it. It’s definitely a children’s book, so didn’t really hold up as an adult for me with the simple language. Wouldn’t reread it again.

A wonderful book. If my girls were still little I would have loved to read this aloud to them. Such a fun coming of age book for girls. I told Momo it was "the sandlot" for girls but really it is so much better.

I usually love most historical fiction I read. This one was just OK.

I did learn a few things that inspired further research about laundry wringers (super dangerous!) and I hadn't the slightest idea Italian-American internment camps during WWII were a thing. Otherwise, there wasn't that much of a story and the characters fell a little flat for me.

This book grew on me as I read it. Mid 1950's, growing up in NYC suburbs. I plan to read it aloud to my fourth grade class--interesting info about treatment of Italian-Americans during World War 2.
