Egan has a real gift for describing the surrounding elements of the story as a whole. The story of Thomas Francis Meagher is fascinating, he lived through the Great Famine in Ireland, the uprising, banishment to Tasmania, the Civil War, and settling the west as territorial governor of Montana. While an he lived an extraordinary life, what really stuck with me was the descriptions of the absolute desolation of the Irish during the famine and the horrid battles of the Civil War.

A very interesting story of a man who pretty much no one has heard of outside of Montana. Well written.

Excellent historical recount of one Man’s defense of the Irish people and homeland, despite countless setbacks. An American civil war hero to boot. Great read!

Slow pace in the first third. Stories of famine-era and earlier Ireland are painful to read at times.
