MG-framing story of old fox telling stories that loosely connect and tie together at the end. A little intense --abuse; death. Battle of the Books

well i’m coming for the sequel now. the 2nd time i read it was šŸ‘Œ
adventurous challenging dark mysterious sad medium-paced

This was delightful. Kids who want a bit of scariness (but not too much) in their books will eat this up! Plus an appearance by Miss Potter (who is not nice to animals!)

Summary: A collection of six connected stories that follows a group of fox kits as they fight to survive in an unforgiving wilderness.

This was actually scary! I had to put the book down for a bit after the first two stories. I haven't been this unnerved by middle grade horror since I read [b:The Night Gardener|18405537|The Night Gardener|Jonathan Auxier|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1411447390l/18405537._SY75_.jpg|26040410]! Even though I really don't like horror or animal stories, I loved this book. I loved the structure of it with the stories within the stories. I loved the idea of the little foxes slowly disappearing after each story leaving the littlest and the bravest of course. I loved how the stories ended up connecting when Mia and Uly came together. And I adored the ending! I am going to be recommending this book so often. It was magical and beautiful and a bit terrifying.

Wow, I'm not sure what to say about this one! It was shocking and horrifying yet sweet and hopeful. I think some kids would really like this, but I would not just give it to anyone. I know some parents would be appalled. There was everything in this book -- death, abuse, disease, disabilities, abandonment. Oh, and Beatrix Potter as an evil character who sucks out the life of innocent animals in an attempt to capture their stories and images for her children's books! That part was real random. Yikes. I am glad I read it though, it was really unique and well done.

Highly recommend this book on audio, which is read by the author. Had the pleasure of hearing him speak to some middle schoolers in my community about a week ago and recognized his voice on the audio immediately. I sincerely loved this story.
adventurous dark mysterious fast-paced

genuinely scary, but also teaches about some of the facts of life and death from a safe distance
