Not for Littles, surprisingly. I’d say 10 and up.
The story line was great, and definitely had creepy and scary parts, but just enough to keep older kids interested. My kids and I were throughly invested in the main characters and wanting to see them through to the end.

Intensely scary...my middle school self would have LOVED this book. Even as an adult, my heart is pounding. Who knew some of the best horror out there was for middle grade readers!?

This was a fantastic book: beautifully written, grounded in nature and in difficult relationships and truly scary (for a child). Highly recommended for kids who want scary books but so much better than most.
This book is on the Alaska Battle of the Books for 5-6 grades. I understand that it definitely fulfills the genre requirement for horror. It does so admirably. It is not a book for the faint of heart: characters die horrific deaths, Beatrix Potter is a monster, and the storyteller has a secret. I like creepy stories but this one has a brutality to it and probably matches the brutality of nature itself. Just not something I like to read.
Slow to start, but SO worth it. I honestly would read this again right now. I can’t believe how vivid Heidicker wrote these characters and the woods in which they live. Everything was told through the eyes of a fox. This fact is what made the book so “scary.” That and the truly brutal realities of nature and the animal kingdom. The layered narrative also made the book incredibly readable. Loved, loved, LOVED it.
Be forewarned— it does contain several pretty violent depictions of animals.

Another Newberry winner, so it must be a good book! It started a bit slow, but I really enjoyed it as it moved along. This would be a nice story for teenagers, or even older grade-schoolers.
