I didn't think the book was anything special at all. There seemed to be too many stories happening and yet I felt like they all took too long to pan out. And I didn't care about any of them. But my X title is checked off now so bonus!

Enjoyable Grafton as always. The "X" was hard to tie in, but the story was good nonetheless. This is the first book I've stayed up late to finish in a long time.

I’ve not read any of the other books in the series, but I imagine by now those that have are familiar with our character Detective Kinsey Millhone. As someone who had no prior knowledge of the character this felt like getting to a party when things were well underway. The story itself really didn’t grip me initially…but this book fulfilled the requirements of a reading challenge so I felt I had to stick with it.
The story opens with Kinsey being tasked with finding contact details for a convict who was given up for adoption. The mother says she wants to help, but soon Kinsey learns that the woman paid her in marked bills and that nothing is quite what she thought.
It took a long time to get the story underway. As we slowly learn of the link between Kinsey’s case and some documents unearthed things get marginally more interesting. The story itself was not that exciting, and all the side story with the elderly neighbours and their con was frustrating.

Since I read A is for Alibi over 12 years ago (and had the series recommended to me about 20 yrs ago), reading a Kinsey Milhone story is like having a comfy visit with an old good friend. I liked that there were several story lines going on in this one.

I wonder why Kinsey's character hasn't ever been made into a TV series? Could it be the whole time warp thing? (Grafton refuses to take Kinsey out of the '80's--saying she's writing in "real time.")

Far too many characters which made it hard to keep track. Felt the ending was a little rushed. Didn’t warm to the main character but I haven’t read the whole series which probably doesn’t help. An extra 0.25 as it’s not a bad read and helps with the a-z challenge

I keep waiting for her to disappoint, but she never does. Grafton is a true craftswoman. Her stories are complex, compelling, and fun. Years ago I re-read "A" through whatever was available. When "Z" comes out (woe the day), I will likely do that again. Just fun reading.

The Scarpetta series is better. I didn’t like the inner dialogue of the main character
