Just...Wow. Every now, and then you find a jewel of a YA fantasy, and this is it. I thought I had it figured out. I was convinced this is the same ol story I've heard/read time and time again in a different font, and I WAS WRONG. As much as there are those familiar fantasy themes throughout that make this feel like a story you know, I did not see or predict the ending or the major plot twist. And that last line of the book made me squeal.
Switching to the audiobook really helped me finish this and was really, really good. I am so excited to see what this story twists and turns in to.

In the beginning the book is slow, but towards the end it picks up. The plot twist is amazing and makes you want to know where it goes and how Will will end up, good or bad, who will stay with him after they learn the truth and who will turn on him. I can't wait to see where this goes in the next book!

It was easier to speak in the dark, words that might not have found their way out in daylight. - Katherine

Dark Rise echoed old school fantasy in the best way possible.

The plot follows the format of many classic tales - a ancient magical war between the forces of light and dark - and does so competently. You can feel that the author has obviously put in a lot of time to construct this mythos which is something I highly value as a fantasy reader. While I didn't think the twists were that clever or groundbreaking, they echoed the themes of the story in a way that felt rewarding. At first, I struggled with the prose as it seems to value simplicity and repetition in a way that did not resonate with me, but the author's ability to explain the lore and exposition were well-crafted enough that I was able to adjust. Very excited to read the next book in the series.
