I love me some Isabel Allende but this is definitely not her finest work. I don’t know if it’s poor translation or what, but this did not have her usual beautiful cadence and attention to detail. I did appreciate the comparison between Jewish children sent to English families during the Holocaust and families getting their children to safety from south of the US. It’s the first comparison I’ve seen made there and it was powerful.

The way Isabel Allende work around historical events to great stories that relate to their readers is amazing. I saw the foreshadowing half way through the book and I didn’t want to accepted but it happened. I do love the relationship that Samuel and Leticia have and the relationship that Samuel and Anita develop.

The book talks about so many topics and I like how Allende connects the characters stories. At l was lost of where the book was going but half way to connected smoothly. I enjoyed this read.

This book didn’t work for me, because it combined two things that should not be combined: on the one hand this book was dealing with extremely heavy traumatic events (as a new mom I cried twice)…. But on the other hand it creates cozy, light found-family vibes with storylines that were interwoven in a forced way (which works in a cozy popcorn read… but not this!).
Isabel Allende is really good in creating fleshed-out, real human characters, and showing the good and the evil. That’s something she did well in this book too for some characters - but some people got more character development than others. And the bad guy was just there for the plot.
I feel like a rewrite/a good editor could’ve gotten this to a 4-star read, so that’s a shame.

Loved this! I love how it all connected together and how each of the characters, despite coming  from different backgrounds, endured similar painful experiences and emotions during their lives without even realising it.
