Very heavy-handed, some of the characters were more caricatures than people. The cursory coverage of a number of stories made it harder to feel connected or invested in anyone.

I recommend reading Valeria Luiselli’s work on the topic of immigration, which is more compelling and authentic.

This was my first time reading a book in Spanish that I hadn't already read in English. I definitely had to push myself to keep reading; at times the plot dragged, the chapters were long, and I had a hard time keeping track of all of the characters, but it's hard to know if these criticisms are fair given the language barrier. Ultimately, I grew to love the characters, and I found the themes very powerful.

This book didn’t work for me, because it combined two things that should not be combined: on the one hand this book was dealing with extremely heavy traumatic events (as a new mom I cried twice)…. But on the other hand it creates cozy, light found-family vibes with storylines that were interwoven in a forced way (which works in a cozy popcorn read… but not this!).
Isabel Allende is really good in creating fleshed-out, real human characters, and showing the good and the evil. That’s something she did well in this book too for some characters - but some people got more character development than others. And the bad guy was just there for the plot.
I feel like a rewrite/a good editor could’ve gotten this to a 4-star read, so that’s a shame.
