The artistic chops on display in this book are off the charts... I fairly enjoyed Rodriguez's work in his series Locke & Key (created with Joe Hill) but Sword of Ages is on a whole other level. "How-did-he-do-that?" action sequences, fantastic architecture, and a rather insane level of detail is all blended into one gorgeous whole. This is the real deal.
The writing is totally serviceable with clean, snappy dialogue, well-done characterization, and an original and fun riff on Arthurian legend that keeps the reader guessing what’s next. The only downside is that this first volume is mostly a set-up to future stories... Given the evident lavish care that Rodriguez is putting into this I wonder how long it's going to be before we have a second volume. Personally I can't wait!
