I found the first half of this book so tedious that if it had not been a book club book I would have DNF’ed it.

I agree with other reviewers that it picked up in the second half but I didn’t love the way it ended. Hopefully things take a turn for the better in the second two books of this series but I feel like a break is necessary before attempting them.

This book may be hard to get into for people who like to know what’s going on at every step of a story, but I promise it is so totally worth it.
The characters are amazing and have so much depth. There are little things and hints you’ll pick up on with each reread, and you’ll love Tamsyn Muir as much as you hate her for feeling things.

Muir has perfected a use of the English language so animated and vibrant that I at times wondered if there was real-life magic at play. I've never met characters so strongly detestable and yet so loveable precisely because of their awfulness, and I've never been so thoroughly surprised in a way that makes so much sense. It also contained a surprising amount of murder mystery. This is one of the best books I have ever read and not just because I cried myself ugly at the ending.

Harrow and Gideon are like Yzma and Kronk but with actual sexual tension.
Cannot recommend enough.

This book left me so emotionally devastated I felt physically ill. I loved every second of it. At times I geniunely had no idea what was going on and the first third of the book was a bit slow but in my opinion the rest of the novel definitely earned the 5 stars.

The ONLY reason this doesn't have a full 5 stars for me is because there are a LOT of characters in this book. But Muir has a list at the beginning which character belongs to which house. I absolutely sprinted through the last like 80 pages.

Tamsyn Muir has SUCH a strong voice as Gideon. She is loyal and flawed and weak and strong. UGH. this may be a book I wish I could read for the first time again.
