This book may be beyond my fantasy reading level. I found the characters very hard to track and the action scenes felt like they came out of nowhere and it was confusing who was involved. I DNF’ed 12 hours into the audiobook because I just wasn’t invested in the story. I can see devout fantasy readers loving this. It did make me chuckle out loud a handful of times.

I went into this not really knowing anything except goth and lesbians and boy howdy did I get more than what I signed up for LOLOL. Was absolutely not expecting this to be kind of a fantasy/sci-fi book with necromancers and sword fighters in space but it works somehow?? I really love the writing style and how funny Gideon's narration is. Also was not expecting the enemies to lovers (??) situation but it's one of my favorite tropes so I'm not complaining. The ending hit me like a truck, like I feel like I should have expected it but I did not and I was extremely upset (in a good way, but jesus damn...). Honestly the worldbuilding was kind of confusing because not very much is explained, but I was having so much fun that I didn't really mind being confused.

This is the first book that I have ever wanted to read again. Now that I’ve read it twice, I can say that I would read it again and again.

Spoilers on overall mood and general feelings of how the book fits into the series:
The first time I read this book, I found it exceedingly scary. Upon rereading, it is much less scary, and much more full of information that matters a lot when it comes to revelations in the books Harrow and Nona. Muir has built an incredible universe full of compelling, frustrating, and heartbreaking individuals.

See below for my original (and continuing) feelings:

I’M SCREAMING AND CRYING AND THROWING UP - this is to say, oh my god read it. It’s worth it.
