The ending and the solution to both mysteries is so bleh
I was hoping for more since the rest of the book atmosphere is so good!

Why have I never heard of this author before? Truly brilliant! I was fully engaged the whole way through, I was interested in all the characters and their fates.

Oh it's so nice to read a murder mystery from a new author. The twists and turns were great. I did guess the murderer about three quarters of the way through but that didn't spoil it for me because there was plenty more to be revealed. And such well written action and brilliant use of the first person. Amelia Butterworth as the narrator is perfect, her voice is flawless throughout. Oh, the bit where she gets proposed to twice in one day! I also felt like all the characters were nice and three dimensional, which does help a murder mystery to be convincing.

My only tiny qualm is I would have liked a bit more digging by Gryce about Mr Trohm as to his background, Agatha would have shoved a bit of Poirot's psychology in there. As to me, that didn't put me off and I will definitely seek out more books by Anna Katharine Green (including the first in this series).

I listened to this via librivox (thank you to the volunteer reader Mary Bard - superb reading). I find librivox a strong test of a book because you can't skim read any dull bits, they are all read out to you at the same speed. This one passed the test with flying colours.

Started off well and kept my interest throughout. Miss Amelia Butterworth, here in her second tale, goes for an extended visit to the home of an old school pal’s adult children, paying her respects after the death of her friend. Her old pal Detective Gryce looks on from a distance, many red herrings are displayed, ghostly goings-on transpire, and it’s just as delightful as the first book - until the last couple of chapters. The ending is preposterous, everything is flipped on its head, nothing makes sense given the previous thirty-eight chapters.

That said, I’m really happy to be reading these late 19th Century mysteries by a prolific and little-known American author. I’d never heard of Anna Katherine Green till I saw a suggestion on Amazon re a new release of Library of Congress mysteries. The Affair Next Door, Miss Butterworth #1, was included.
