I was acutely aware while reading this that a lot of this is in-house discussion among the African American branch of the Christian family, and as an outsider to that branch I decided that my job here was to bear witness and to listen, and to do the same for my neighbors who don't yet know Jesus. There's a whole cultural component that I won't ever know from the inside, much like my non-Asian brothers and sisters will not ever understand my Asian American experience from the inside, so I must do what I ask of them: Stay humble, listen more than I talk, put into practice the principles of the gospel, and offer answers when they're asked for.

I could make some criticisms of what I sometimes felt were cavalier dismissals of some ideas that fall outside the neo-Reformed camp a lot of these authors come from (the chapter on feminism/womanism/intersectionality comes to mind), but all in all I found this a helpful resources for better understanding my African American neighbors. That cannot, and must not, substitute for my actually getting to know *them.*

This book is such a blessing. I have so many good friends that have fallen into these ideologies and I’m thankful how they showed how to engage them. This knowledge is also liberating for black believers still in the faith today. I especially enjoyed the chapters on black womanhood and missional living. No one will ever borrow this book, it will never leave my house. It’s that good!

main focus on reading ch 1, 2, 6, 7, and 9 for class. I will probably come back to this at some point out of curiosity!

I would say that the book would be more useful without the second chapter... I found it aggressively divisive and often lacking sources, examples, and citations. The other chapters I read were polar opposite, though, and as I said in an update and will say again here, later chapters of the book are a healing balm to the soul.

After reading a lot of books that keep us at the table having theoretical conversations, it was refreshing to read a book that armed me to GO and make disciples. I feel much more competent to have conversation with real life people in my life who are believing these things and have a zeal to go and share the Gospel and make disciples.

This book expresses sentiments that I share. As a black Christian I do believe we need to be equipt to preach the gospel at all times. We need to know the bible but we also need to know about these practices that threaten peoples eternity while acknowledging the real harm of whitewashing. Important book. I would recommend this to everyone.

Christian must read. It is not perfect, but it is a great book to dig deeper in the Christian faith as well as learning the background of the faith and how it affected history.
